Demon Slayer – Synopsis

In Taishō-era Japan, Tanjiro Kamado’s, a charcoal seller, life was shattered when he found out that all of his family was slaughtered by a demon except for his sister Nezuko who became a demon after the encounter.

During this time, a secret society called the Demon Slayer Corps had been fighting demons for centuries. Demons appeared after Muzan Kibutsuji injected his own blood to humans which made them have supernatural strength called Blood Demon Art.

Each demon has different Blood Demon Art depending on their level.

Demons feed off humans and have super strength. They have a long lifespan however, the only way to kill them is by decapitation using weapons such as Nichirin, poison from wisteria flower, and sunlight.

To help her sister transform back to human, Tanjiro set out on his journey to find out who can help them.

While on his journey, Tanjiro encountered Giyū Tomioka, the Water Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps. He sent Tanjiro to Sakonji Urokodaki, his retired master, so he can train to be a Demon Slayer.

Even though Nezuko became a demon, she still has human-like emotions. This is the reason why Tanjiro is determined to transform her back.

Tanjiro spent two years of training and practicing his breathing style. The breathing style of a demon slayer increases their power against demons.

After passing the Final Selection, an exam to become a demon slayer, Tanjiro officially became part of the corps. He then proceeded to slay demons alongside Nezuko.

Yes, Nezuko helps his brother even though she became a demon. Sakonji used suggestive hypnosis on her, making her think that all humans are family.

He contained his sister in a box which he carries on his back. Nezuko’s new power allowed her to shrink to a physical size of a child to hide from the sunlight through their journey.

Giyū also placed bamboo in her mouth to prevent her from biting anyone.

Tanjiro learned the Breathing Styles which increased his demon-slaying abilities. These styles are elemental breathing techniques which increase  the abilities of the demon slayers.

Why is Demon Slayer so good?

Why is Demon Slayer so Good
Demon Slayer – Why is it so good?

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba can be considered good just by looking at the awards it received through the years. Koyoharu Gotouge’s impressive story-telling and illustration are also the reasons why the series is good.

Demon Slayer doesn’t only focus on action. It has a balanced genre of drama, adventure, mystery, and friendship.

Each character has their own light which makes them complement the whole series. They all stand out on their own.

Another uniqueness of Demon Slayer is that Koyoharu started the series with action (Episode 1 depicted the slaughter of the Kamado family) unlike other anime that takes time to build up the story line.

Koyoharu also managed to showcase drama in contrast to the breathtaking action theme. Each character, especially the demons,  has a sad backstory.

This characteristic of Demon Slayer makes the fans empathize with the demons which is quite ironic since they are the enemies.

The biggest factor why Demon Slayer is so good lies in the animation. Studio Ufotable’s spectacular animation gave justice to the manga version.

Because of Demon Slayer, Studio Ufotable gained recognition.
